Drupal 7 Security Updates
Keeping a website secure requires diligence in security practices. Security updates are a necessary tool to protect websites from hackers with malicious intent.
Drupal 7 features added security for scheduled tasks and an improved password and login system. New security updates are provided as needed on a monthly schedule as new threats emerge. With the new frequency of needed security updates Drupal 7 includes tools to make updates simpler, however customized sites should always test modules on a non-production site.
Drupal 7 Usability Updates
Drupal 7 provides easier access to administrative areas, improved WYSIWYG editor integration, more drag-and-drop for administrative tasks, permissions that include a description for easier management, and setting up automated task runs (cron) can now be achieved via Drupal's configuration for easier management. A redesigned password strength validator also makes it kinder, gentler and clearer.
Drupal 7 includes added support for default text formats to be assigned on a per-role basis to allow more granular access while providing increased security. Added "vertical tabs" to increases usability. Improved time zone support. They've also added a new "Shortcuts" module to allow users to create their own menu for the pages they visit the most. New and improved administrative and user dashboards allow easy access to content relevant to the logged in user.
Drupal 7 Search Engine Optimization Updates
Drupal 7 offers better support for search engine optimization and web linking. Added RDF and micro data support help ensure compliance with the newest standards in optimization. The Nodewords module used in Drupal 6 is no longer supported and has been replaced with the improved Metatag module.
The new Metatag module allows you to automatically provide structured metadata, aka "meta tags", on your website. In the context of search engine optimization, when people refer to meta tags they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tags that may help improve the rankings and display of your site in search engine results. Meta tags have additional uses like the Open Graph Protocol used by Facebook, specifying the canonical location of content across multiple URLs or domains.
Drupal 7 Responsive Web Design
Drupal 7 also supports a wide variety of tools and themes needed to build mobile first, responsive websites. Responsive design provides a way for your site's content to be viewed in an optimal way independent of screen size. Drupal responsive themes support the "one web" idea where you only build one site for all devices instead of a dedicated mobile version.
Responsive design uses a blend of fluid layouts, CSS3 media queries and flexible images that when combined, allow your site to adapt to the device it's being viewed on.
